Unlicensed Driver Continues to Endanger Safe Drivers in Orange County
According to the Daily Freeman , a 35-year-old woman was arrested recently in connection with an auto accident that occurred in Orange County. The accident resulted in injuries to three people and allegedly occurred while the woman was on her smartphone.
The woman who apparently caused the accident was not only driving while distracted but was also driving without a valid driver’s license, according to the accusations. Our Orange County accident lawyers know that those who drive on a suspended or revoked license are particularly dangerous, both because they have a track record of breaking driving safety laws and because they typically do not have auto insurance to cover the costs of losses.
Unlicensed Driver Presents a Risk on the Roads
According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, the woman involved in the recent auto accident was driving on Mud Mills Road, when she accessed the Internet on her smartphone. Because she was paying attention to the phone and not the road, her car crossed into the northbound lane going in the wrong direction.
The driver collided with a car driven by a 48-year-old Mountaindale man. The man’s wife was transported to the hospital in critical condition with a head injury, while the man was taken to a local medical center with injuries that were reported as minor.
The passenger in the car with the driver who caused the accident also sustained injury. The passenger was the driver’s 10-year-old son, who was also airlifted to the hospital where he too was treated for head injuries.
Unfortunately, these accident victims who sustained head injuries may experience ongoing complications. Trauma to the head can result in traumatic brain injury, which can cause cognitive impairment, mood changes, fatigue, seizures and a host of other medical concerns. Head trauma can also increase the chances of dementia and can sometimes result in permanent brain damage that causes physical and mental impairment.
Accident victims are normally able to pursue compensation against those drivers who cause them to suffer accidents. Unfortunately, the driver in this case did not have a valid driver’s license, so it is likely she also did not have an insurance policy that will cover losses. Insurers typically issue policies only to licensed drivers. Without an insurance policy, injured victims will have a difficult time obtaining compensation from the negligent driver.
