Forming a ring around Louisville, Interstate 265 has seen its share of car accidents in recent years. With the city’s population rapidly increasing and traffic on the highways around the city increasing as well, some of these accidents turn fatal. Tragically, it’s not uncommon to see fatal accidents on this stretch of highway – known as the Gene Snyder Freeway – due to speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and other negligent behaviors.
While the cause might vary from one accident to another, Louisville personal injury attorneys at the Shelton Law Group understand that these deadly car accidents have a serious impact on their victims and their families. Two recent accidents illustrate what can happen in a split-second when a drunk or distracted driver makes a mistake behind the wheel, with the results being tragic in both cases.Car Accident Causes

Fatal Car Accidents A Week Apart In Louisville
On June 7, WHAS reported that a drunk driver was to blame for a fatal accident near the Shelbyville exit. The driver, who was behind the wheel with a .16 blood alcohol content – twice the legal limit in Kentucky – crossed the center median into oncoming traffic, crashing his white truck into another vehicle. While the impact of the crash sent the truck onto its roof, the driver of the other vehicle was killed as a result of the accident.
Just a week before, a fatal car accident claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman on the same stretch of highway. In another story reported by WHAS, the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta failed to see that traffic had come to a stop and lost control of the vehicle, rear-ending a driver in front of her before rolling over several times. The passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was killed instantly after being thrown from the car.
In both of these cases, innocent victims lost their lives as a result of another driver’s reckless behavior. Speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and other forms of negligent driving can lead to serious rear-end accidents, rollover accidents, and – worst case – head-on collisions on Kentucky roadways. On one stretch of highway, unfortunately, these accidents are all too familiar.
Accidents On The Gene Snyder Freeway Not Uncommon
Sadly, the area between I-65 and I-71, known as the Gene Snyder Freeway, has become known for these types of fatal accidents. With its low-grass medians providing little protection for crossover accidents, it’s possible for a drunk or distracted driver to easily cross into oncoming traffic, thus creating the potential for a fatal accident. With its concrete pavement surface, too, this stretch of highway connecting Louisville’s suburbs has become known for its slick surfaces in wet weather, often causing rear-end accidents or rollover accidents.
